EMBRACE THE “ECO SUNSKA” SPIRIT!

The « Eco SunSka » part – waste management and recycling – is the fundamental pillar of the festival social responsibility. Since the early 2000’s and the beginning of re-usable cup, waste management policy is trying to improve the overall mechanism year after year.

The effects of this commitment by the organizing team are detailed below.

Waste sorting

Since the beginning of the 2000s and the introduction of returnable cups, the waste management policy has been trying to improve the general system season after season. The results are convincing, since the waste recovery rate has increased from 39.7 to 42%, and at the same time the total production of waste has remained stable (56.9T, +4.6%) despite the strong increase in attendance. In addition, the team sorts 5 different streams compared to 3 at most festivals, and the sorting is checked after the festival-goers, to ensure the best possible recovery rate of the waste produced during the operation on site.

Environmental hygiene 

– autonomous WC cabins with bio pellets. The effluents are treated in a purification station on the same principle as the sewage system of the houses.

– reuse of dirty water from showers to fill toilet tanks.

– very low water consumption, 30 liters of water for 200 passages, i.e. 15cl of water per passage against a minimum of 3 or 6 liters for a private individual.

– creation of a basin on site to collect waste water from the showers and supply the toilets

– installation of misters to limit water consumption

– custom-made showers allowing to transport 200 showers in 4 semi-trailers, against 12 semi-trailers for the festivals that use bungalows.

Structures

– we make the choice to replace a maximum of bungalows (modular) by tents in order to reduce the number of transports. Thus, we pass from 14 transports by semi-trailer in 2018, to 6 in 2019. This reduction is also due to the acquisition of several modulars that will remain on site and will be used on other events.

Lighting

– we are using more and more low energy lighting each year, such as LED and solar-powered autumn lighting.

Transports

– we provide free shuttles from our nearest train stations to the festival to encourage the use of rail transportation.

– for several years we have been communicating with our service providers so that they use the same carriers, which has resulted in optimized loading and a reduction in the number of semi-trailers.

– we encourage providers to return equipment to our site from their last event instead of taking it home and moving it again.

– Finally, the selection of service providers is based on several criteria, of which location is the first parameter. 80% of our service providers are based less than 40 kilometers from the festival; 15% are located between 40 and 80 kilometers away; 3% are located more than 80 kilometers away but in the Gironde region; finally, 2% are nationals for rare services specific to our sector.

Accommodation

– we lodge a maximum of people on the site and call upon all the small lodgings around the site to reduce the ecological impact of transport during the festival.

Catering

– we ask the street vendors and our restaurant owner to use a maximum of organic products in short circuits (a contract is signed and random checks are carried out to ensure that this line of conduct is being followed)

– use of reusable or recyclable tableware

Works 

– all materials used are recycled or natural materials, the raw material being essentially local.

– the maintenance of the Domaine de Nodris, site of the festival, is carried out in the respect of nature with zero chemical products.
